Regulating your Cycle Naturally with Chinese Medicine | How acupuncture & Chinese medicine can support irregular, absent, heavy or light periods in Hobart
A healthy menstrual cycle is more than just a monthly bleed – it’s a reflection of your overall health. if your cycle is irregular, absent, too heavy or too light, it may be your body’s way of asking for support. At South Hobart Acupuncture we use the wisdom of Chinese medicine to gently guide your cycle back into balance, working with your body not against it.
What do irregular periods mean in Chinese medicine?
In Chinese medicine, your menstrual cycle is governed by the flow of Qi (air and metabolism) and Blood, and the health of key organ systems – particularly the Liver, Spleen and Kidneys.
We commonly see a few key patterns in the clinic:
🌿 Irregular Cycles – often linked to Liver Qi stagnation where stress impacts the regularity of a cycle, or post-pill hormonal shifts. Cycles may come too early, too late or vary from month to month.
🌑 Absent Periods (Amenorrhoea) – may be due to depletion in the body such as Blood deficiency, Kidney depletion, over-exercising or under-eating. This is common after long-term contraception use, weight loss or burn out.
💧 Light or Scanty Flow – often related to Blood deficiency or poor circulation. You may also experience fatigue, dizziness or feeling cold.
🔥 Heavy Bleeding or Flooding – often linked to Spleen Qi deficiency or Heat in the Blood. This may be accompanied by PMS, clotting, irritability or pain.
Rather than suppressing symptoms, Chinese medicine aims to restore the body’s natural rhythm to support hormonal balance, promote ovulation and regular, symptom-free periods.
